Prescribed fires planned for the Dolores Ranger District

DOLORES, Colo., May 12, 2023—The San Juan National Forest’s Dolores Ranger District is planning to conduct several prescribed burns starting in May. Burning operations will take place over multiple days when weather and fuel conditions are favorable and may continue throughout the summer and into fall based on conditions. Both hand and aerial ignition methods may be utilized, following the weather, fuel and smoke parameters stated in the prescribed fire plan. Burning operations will be conducted by U.S.

Recycling Tips and Tricks

Four Corners Recycling Initiative provides free recycling drop off sites in Dolores and Mancos as well as at the Public Lands Office.

The large bins accept:

  • Cardboard (no plastic attached and please flatten boxes the bins fill quickly)
  • Plastic 1 & 2 (please rinse out)
  • Paper (no newspaper-newspaper will contaminate the entire bin of paper)
  • Mixed metals

Sandbags Available and Other Preparedness Advice

Although it is the homeowner's responsibility to protect their homes, during an emergency situation, Montezuma County has a limited number of bags and sand available for those who are currently experiencing flooding issues. (Empty sandbags are also available for purchase at local stores such as Slavens and Choice Building Supply.)

Empty sandbags for residents of Dolores (or upriver) are available at the Dolores Town Hall (Monday-Friday, 9-12 and 1-4:30) or at The Outfitter (Saturday 7-6 and Sunday 8-5).

Dolores Recreation Access and Infrastructure Improvement Project - Notice of Opportunity to Object

The San Juan National Forest has prepared an environmental assessment (EA) and draft decision notice and finding of no significant impact (DN/FONSI) for the Dolores Recreation Access and Infrastructure Improvement Project. The proposed action is to be located on the Dolores Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest, in three discrete locations, including the Boggy Draw trail system, the Transfer Horse Campground Horse Corral, and Forest Service Road 385.
